This scholarship will be awarded to a student studying abroad through a program offered by the Center for International Education at UW-Eau Claire. The recipient must have financial need.

Donor Background:

This scholarship is funded by four college roommates that graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1982. Judi, Sandy, Cheryl, and Christine still travel across the world together. Their passion for traveling started at UW-Eau Claire, where the majority of them traveled abroad. They hope to give a student with financial need the opportunity to enjoy some of the wonderful fortunes they have experienced while traveling the world.

The scholarship will be awarded to an incoming full-time resident freshman that intends to major in accounting and work in the profession upon graduation. A successful applicant for this award must have participated in school or community organizations and exhibited a potential for leadership as displayed by those high school activities. Candidates must have a minimum of a 25 composite on the ACT (or comparable SAT) AND rank in the top 25% of their graduating class (or GPA of 3.5) to be eligible.

Awarded to full-time IS majors. Student must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25, have completed at least 90 credits by the end of the receiving semester, and be returning as a full-time IS major the following semester. Other considerations include past academic record, work experience, extracurricular activities, and future plans.

Awarded to a full-time resident sophomore or junior accounting major. The recipient must intend to work in the profession, preferably in industry, upon graduation, and have a GPA of 3.0 or above. The successful applicant for this award must have participated in college or community organizations and exhibited a potential for leadership as displayed by those activities.

Financial need is required.

Scholarships are available each year to returning students. Applicants must be age 23 or older, currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program offered by or affiliated with UW-Eau Claire and in good academic standing, with a total GPA of 2.0 or above.

Applicants must be a declared Environmental Public Health major and submit an essay on how they understand the essential connections between a sustainable biologically diverse environment and long-term human health. The essay should include both concepts and applications from university courses as well as personal experiences and values.

This scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding sophomore or junior Accounting major. Recipients must have a 3.0 or higher GPA. Priority will be given to applicants living within a commutable distance to the Edina or Mankato Abdo offices.

All applicants must have completed a bachelor's degree or equivalent in communication disorders and be in the second year of the graduate degree program in CSD at UW-Eau Claire when this scholarship is received. The recipient must be composing a written thesis as part of program completion.

Donor Background:

This fund was established by Rebecca and Jon Stellmacher in honor of their daughter Abigail, who completed undergraduate (2009) and graduate (2011) degrees in communication sciences and disorders at UW-Eau Claire. The donors understand that there are typically a limited number of CSD graduate students who complete a thesis in any given year. However, it is critical that the recipient of this scholarship be working on a thesis. The donors also understand that the fund may go un-awarded if there are no qualified thesis students.

This scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman at UW-Eau Claire. Candidates must have a minimum of a 25 composite on the ACT (or comparable SAT) AND rank in the top 25% of their graduating class (or GPA of 3.5) to be eligible.

This scholarship is renewable for up to three additional years provided the student remains in good academic standing.

Donor Background:

Adam Coolidge is a 2004 UW-Eau Claire graduate, majoring in mathematics. He taught at Chippewa Falls High School and began working in the UW-Eau Claire Foundation office in 2022. His wife Sandy Coolidge is a 2003 UW-Eau Claire graduate, majoring in business administration. She has worked for The Hartford and United Health Group. Adam and Sandy are grateful for their Blugold experiences and for the faculty and staff who have helped them on their educational journey.

Two scholarships of $2,000 are available.

The purpose of this fund is to support student success, as well as to support students to be engaged in positive activities, initiatives, or high impact practices that enhance their collegiate experience. This fund provides direct assistance for students assisting the Admissions office. Recipients must be currently enrolled as a UW-Eau Claire student and must meet with a staff member in Admissions prior to dissemination of funds.

This scholarship can be renewed provided the recipient maintains a minimum GPA of 2.75, remains an active Campus Ambassador, and continues engagement with the Admissions office.

Donor Background:

This scholarship was established by Christine Webster in memory of Ailish, a 2004 UW-Eau Claire graduate who died on November 25, 2006, along with her cousin as a result of a car accident while she was visiting family and friends in Egypt. Ailish was an active and engaged student leader, providing leadership to the Office of Multicultural Affairs and the women's studies program. She touched many people in her short time here.

There are two Blumenthal Awards for personal achievement:

1.) Blumenthal Award for Public Sociology, which is given annually to a sociology major who demonstrates an exemplary engagement in public scholarship and/or community service. One scholarship of $250 is available.

2.) Blumenthal Award for Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity, which is given to a sociology major who demonstrates a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusivity in scholarship, and/or leadership. One scholarship of $250 is available.

Donor Background:

Albert Blumenthal received his doctorate in sociology at the University of Chicago. His teaching career spanned the University of South Dakota at Vermillion, Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, and the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire. He wrote several books including Small Town Stuff about his home of Philipsburg, Montana. Marie Blumenthal set up this scholarship to honor Albert.

Awarded to a full-time junior accounting major with financial need who has completed Accounting 301. Student must have a GPA of 3.0 or above and potential for leadership as displayed by significant participation in University, College, department, or community organizations, and have a desire to enter the public accounting profession, banking, or finance industry.

Preference will be given to individuals who work part-time to support their education expenses.

This scholarship must not reduce other financial aid, excluding federal work-study funding.

In the event of a tie between eligible students, the award will be given to the student with the highest cumulative GPA at the time. It shall not be divided.

This scholarship is for junior or senior information systems majors with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 who have shown a true desire to excel in the information systems field.

Alex and Michele Reinders have created this scholarship to help studentswho have a desire to achieve in the field of information technology/systems continue their education. Alex graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1980 with a degree in information management and business administration. Michele graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1985 with a degree in computer science.

A variable number of scholarships from $100 up to $1,000 are available.

This scholarship is impactful as it will provide Forensics participants who have financial need with the opportunity to direct their time to preparing for and competing in Forensics tournaments; with less time devoted to working so to afford their college tuition.

Recipient must demonstrate financial need as required by the UW-Eau Claire Foundation's scholarship award standards.

Donor Background:

Alex Brown was a student under Karen Morris and Kelly Jo Wright competing for four years and graduated in 2016. Before coming on team, Alex had an understanding that not everyone was as able or privileged as he was to be able to attend college and compete for a forensics team. During his time on team, both Karen and KJ helped grow and further imprint the importance of giving back. Alex served as the National Student Representative for the AFA-NIET were he served as the spokesperson for the student body and helped give voices to leadership that might not have been initially heard. He also worked for the team as the Director's Assistant. While on the team, and after graduation, there was always a need that presented itself by students on Eau Claire's team where taking extra jobs or out-of-state tuition, or other unforeseen circumstances took place that would put financial pressure on some of teams competitors. After graduation and realizing how great this need could be, the creation of this scholarship was formed through the idea of giving back, and alleviating some of that financial burden that students face.

One scholarship of $600 is available.

This scholarship will be awarded to students demonstrating academic promise and financial need as established by the Financial Aid office. Preference will be given to incoming freshmen students. While the recipient should be a student of academic promise, the student does not have to be near the top of their high school graduating class. The award is renewable for three subsequent, sequential years if satisfactory progress is made while maintaining a full-time academic load.

The student must be a junior elementary education major with a minimum GPA of 3.2. Financial need is considered, but not required. The scholarship is renewable for senior year.

Scholarship Background:

This scholarship was established in memory of Alice M. Pittman, a lifelong educator. She started teaching in a one-room schoolhouse in rural Pepin County when she was 18 years old. Alice earned two bachelor’s degrees in education from UW - Eau Claire in 1955 and 1969. She spent the last 18 years of her teaching career at Plum City Elementary School, first as a math teacher and then as principal. She retired from teaching in 1975.

Alice understood the importance of a good education. This scholarship aims to reward those who accept the responsibility of preparing today’s youth for tomorrow’s challenges.

One scholarship of $1,950 is available.

This scholarship is available to students who have a desire to give back through their passion in Special Education. To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must be majoring in Special Education, be a sophomore, junior, or senior and have financial need. The recipient must show a true passion for Special Education as a career, as well as show a desire to help others through their work or through community service.

This scholarship offers the possibility of a renewal award for one student for up to three years, based on full time academic progress and annual approval from the Department of Special Education.

Donor Information:

Ronald Anderson has created this scholarship to help students, who help others. Ronald is a 1969 Chemistry major. Alida was a 1972 Special Education major who loved working with special needs students. Before her passing, she devoted her life to helping others even as she worked through her own physical health challenges. Ronald would like his annual gift go to someone who shares that same desire to help others in the Special Education field.

Awarded to an outstanding incoming freshman student who has graduated from high school in Wisconsin or Minnesota, has been accepted for admission to UW-Eau Claire and demonstrates significant financial need as verified by the UW-Eau Claire Financial Aid Office.

To be considered, students must rank in the top 25% of their graduating classes and have a minimum of a 25 composite on the ACT (or comparable SAT), have a well-rounded high school record of academic achievement, leadership and involvement in extracurricular activities. In general a student who has a zest for life and a desire to get the most out of their college education will receive primary consideration.

This scholarship has a primary preference for an incoming freshman from St. Louis County, Minnesota and a secondary preference for a student planning to study in the College of Business. If neither criterion is met, the scholarship should be awarded to an incoming freshman with declared financial need, regardless of residence or field of study.

$750 award available for freshman year. Recipients who have a successful freshman year and maintain good academic standing, according to the standards at UW-Eau Claire, by the end of their first year will receive a $750 scholarship their sophomore year.

Awarded to a full-time sophomore, junior, or senior who will be enrolled for the full academic year following notification of the award. The applicant shall have demonstrated active involvement and a passion for social justice and inclusion. Students who have a demonstrated record of engagement in the Black Student Association (BSA) or the Latinx Student Association (formerly known as the Student Organization of Latinos or SOL) also should receive priority. The donors intend for the scholarship to encourage student leaders to be a voice of change on campus.

While financial need should not be a priority in selecting the best recipient, it should be a consideration if there is more than one outstanding applicant with equal qualifications.

This scholarship is not intended to be renewed for the same student from year to year.

Donor Background:

Angie Hambrick is the Director of the Diversity Center at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA. She graduated from UW-Eau Claire with a degree in communication and completed her master's degree at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale.

Angela Pittman Taylor, also a communications graduate, received her master's from UW-Milwaukee. Angela is the vice president of public relations for Robert W. Baird & Co. in Milwaukee.

The two women were friends in college and have remained close since graduating. As students, they were active in multicultural activities on campus and were passionate and dedicated student leaders in the areas of inclusion and social justice. They are working to engage other multicultural alumni to support this collective scholarship effort as a visible testament to their desire to "pay it forward" by encouraging current and future students to find their voices and be leaders for change.

Donor Background:

Leonard C. Haas was the third leader to be president and first to be chancellor of the school which now is known as the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. In 1935 he earned his degree from the same institution which then was called the Eau Claire State Teachers College. While teaching history at Wausau Senior High School he met Dorellen Lambert. They were married in 1941 and moved to Eau Claire where Leonard taught history.

During the next 18 years Dr. Haas earned a master's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a doctorate from the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis. He held administrative position such as registrar and dean of instruction and served in leadership roles in both the university and community.

On the death of President William R. Davies on December 10, 1959, Haas was named president of Wisconsin State College - Eau Claire with the strong support of the faculty.

Leonard and Dorellen often graciously entertained students, faculty, and community members in their home. Prospective faculty often stayed in their home overnight. Dr. Haas credited Dorellen's “uncanny memory for people” and that she liked people so much as two of the reasons she was so successful in her role as social hostess and in creating a sense of community. Leonard and Dorellen were very interested and supportive of the arts, theatre, and music. Their goal was to attend all campus concerts, recitals, plays, and art shows. They almost succeeded.

At the Golden Jubilee Year, 1965-66, President Haas received the Distinguished Alumni Service Award. Dorellen Haas was named an Honorary Blugold in 1980.

Haas retired as Chancellor in 1980 but continued to teach and serve as an academic advisor until 1985. Chancellor Emeritus Leonard Haas died on March 14, 1998. Dorellen died on April 20, 2007. After their deaths, the Fine Arts Building on Water Street was named the Leonard and Dorellen Haas Fine Arts Center in recognition of their strong presence on campus for more than 50 years and their love of the fine arts.

During a time of burgeoning enrollments, dynamic changes in higher education, and conflicts within the United States, Haas led with respect and empathy for the students, faculty, and community. Chancellor Haas was a highly respected educational and community leader who was very influential and received many awards and honors over his lifetime.

Leonard and Dorellen Haas enjoyed international travel and were very interested in international education and provided strong leadership for the establishment of Study Abroad Programs for students. This scholarship was established to honor their legacy at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and to assist students in study abroad.

Chancellor Leonard Haas was a distinguished alum of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Dorellen was named as an Honorary Blugold. This scholarship was established to honor the outstanding legacy of Leonard and Dorellen Haas who were interested in all students.

Donor Information:

Richard Edwards Hibbard and Jane Mooney Hibbard were both graduates of Eau Claire State Teachers College (1932 and 1934 respectively). They met during their student days. Upon leaving Eau Claire, Dr. Hibbard went on to earn Master's Degrees from Northwestern University (Political Science) and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University (Diplomatic History) and a Ph.D. from Northwestern (Political Science). He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He taught at Anatolia College, Salonika Greece, and Muhlenberg College, Allentown, PA. During World War II he served with the Office of Strategic Services and the US Department of State, Washington D.C. Jane went on from Eau Claire to teach High School English and Chorus for five years before her marriage to Richard in 1939.

The Hibbards returned to Eau Claire in 1947 when Dr. Hibbard was hired at the College as a veteran's counselor and instructor in political science. He returned to government service from 1953-1955 in Washington D.C. At the end of that time he again returned to Eau Claire to become the Director of Admissions followed by Dean of Instruction, Vice-president for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty. He led many committees and worked closely with other administrators, students, and the community as the university grew and changed rapidly.

Dr Hibbard also had a deep sense of civic responsibility. He was elected to the Eau Claire City Council in 1957 serving four terms including president in 1963-65. He was active in his church, in the Sacred Heart Hospital Board of Trustees and in Rotary International. In October, 1971, Dr. Hibbard became the acting President and later the Interim Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. In 1972 as Dr. Hibbard and Jane prepared to leave the Homecoming Dance, he had a heart attack. He died on October 17, 1972, and the campus went into mourning. A service "In Remembrance and Recognition of the Life and Person of Richard Hibbard" was held on October 19 in the Zorn Arena. The humanities building which was under construction was named the "Richard E. Hibbard Humanities Hall." Jane continued her active interest in and support of the students and faculty at UW-Eau Claire. She died in Eau Claire in 2004.

The Alumni Scholarship-Richard and Jane Hibbard was established to honor the lives of two remarkable alumni who provided outstanding, selfless service to the University.

Donor Background:

Brian Carlson earned his undergraduate degree in accounting from UW-Eau Claire in 1996. He is the founder and CEO of Ambrion, a Minneapolis-based search and placement firm that specializes in the accounting and finance profession. He also serves on the UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association Board of Directors.

Alyssa (Buchholtz) Carlson earned her accounting degree from UW-Eau Claire in 1999, and along with Brian, initially launched her accounting career at EY in Minneapolis.

As an undergraduate, Brian was a recipient of the Cargill Accounting Scholarship, which was based on academic achievement, not financial necessity. In appreciation for students in similar situations, Brian would like this scholarship to be awarded based on factors other than financial need.

Recipients of this scholarship must be junior elementary education majors with an interest in teaching the first four grades of elementary school. They must have a GPA of at least 3.00. All things being equal, preference may be given to a student with financial need. If a tie-breaker is needed, a student displaying leadership qualities should get the highest consideration.

If a GPA of 3.00 is maintained, this scholarship is available to be renewed for two additional years.

Donor Background:

This fund was established to recognize Amy Snodgrass's long career in elementary education. Amy had a true passion for reading and teaching children. Amy started out her pursuits of a higher education when she received a two-year teacher's certificate at age 17 at Eau Claire State Teacher's College (now known as UW-Eau Claire). After teaching for several years, she went back to the Teacher's College to complete her 4-year degree. She also completed a degree in social work from Boston University and received a master's degree in teaching from the University of Colorado.

She taught in the American School in Germany while serving her country in the Air Force. It was after her time in the service that she moved to Berkeley, CA to teach 4th grade and focus on remedial reading. She was inspiring for children who needed remedial work on their reading skills and taught children to love to read.

When she and her husband moved to Paradise, CA in their retirement, she continued that passion by not only reading to neighborhood children, but actually teaching some of them to read. Amy spent time in Norway as an adult. She grew up in a bi-lingual home. Her husband Murray was her biggest fan. He said she not only taught children to love to read but was an inspiration for him, teaching him this same love of reading.

Andrea Angelo Giovanni Cecchini, born in Bolzano, Italy, lived for a time in Sardinia, endured WWII in Florence, Italy, and then immigrated to the USA in 1952. He found solace from the problems of being a new émigré (few friends, a new language, and family responsibilities) in painting. During his adult life, sculpture, watercolor and his passion - life-drawing, kept him disciplined in hand and eye. He died in 2008 in Eau Claire.

A variable number of scholarships from $500 up to $3,000 are available.

This scholarship is for students demonstrating Multicultural Student Services engagement at UW-Eau Claire. Recipients must be accepted to UW-Eau Claire and be enrolled as a student in good standing with the university and plans to major in nursing, accounting, or education.

It is the donors' desire to help students majoring in a degree that will lead them to successful employment after graduating. If there are no students planning to major in nursing, education, or accounting and there are other deserving students, the donors would entertain a recommendation from the university regarding other potentially strong candidates for the scholarship.

Multicultural Student Services faculty may require the recipient to also complete tutoring or mentoring activities during the year in which the award is made. The Multicultural Student Services office will be responsible for monitoring this activity and determining if the recipient has fulfilled their obligation.

The scholarship is renewable for the second year of enrollment if the recipient is meeting satisfactory academic progress and upon the recommendation of the Multicultural Student Services faculty.

This Scholarship was established in 2010 by Anna and Andrew Burish of Middleton, WI. Both Anna and Andrew are first generation college graduates who value the importance of a college education and the need to have a hand up to future students who aspire to attain a college degree and success in their careers.

Two scholarships of $1,500 are available.

This scholarship will be awarded to a first generation, undergraduate student who has been accepted into the nursing program and demonstrates financial need. Recipients must be pursuing their first undergraduate degree and should have limited means of support. Support should be determined primarily through their financial situation, with a secondary consideration being given to their personal base of support for their pursuit of a college degree. The donors want to support students who are pursuing their first undergraduate degree and do not have much support available to them, be it financial or otherwise.

Preference should be given to those students with strong academic records who show great promise to be outstanding nurses. However, if there are applicants with great promise who have encountered academic difficulties outside their control, they should be given consideration for the award.

It is the donors' intent that if the first recipient continues to make good academic progress through the nursing curriculum and continues to have demonstrated financial need, the scholarship may be renewed for the recipient until they completes their undergraduate nursing degree. Eventually, as the scholarship endowment grows, a second scholarship may be awarded.

The successful recipient must have participated in college or community organizations and exhibited a potential for leadership as displayed by those activities. In addition, the recipient should aspire to boldly explore career opportunities outside their comfort zone to make a profound difference in the organizations and communities they serve. An example would be an accounting/finance student from a rural area who embraces the notion of securing professional opportunities in a large, metropolitan area.

If a tie results during the recipient selection process, the award will be given to the student with the higher overall grade point average. The award shall not be divided and given to two or more candidates.

The intent of the scholarship is to not reduce other financial aid, excluding federal work-study funding.

Aric J. Steffen, who grew up working on a dairy farm near Glenwood City, WI, attended UW-Eau Claire and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting and business finance in 2005. Aric aspired to making a difference in his chosen field and credits his UW-Eau Claire education for providing the confidence and inspiration to explore career opportunities beyond his dreams. As a result, Aric has forged a successful accounting and finance career in New York City, first as an auditor with Ernst & Young and now as controller for Greenlight Capital, Inc. As a UW-Eau Claire undergraduate, Aric was the recipient of the International Education Scholarship. Because of the life-changing experiences provided by UW-Eau Claire, Aric is inspired to give back to the university to provide similar opportunities to like-minded Accounting and Finance undergraduate students.

Arlyn Gravunder worked as a custodian at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire from 1967-1989. He was a fan of all student and sports, especially basketball. He was a charter member of the Backcourt Club for basketball and instrumental in getting bus trips for adult fans traveling to away basketball games where fans had as good of a time on the bus as at the game. Later, Arlyn became a true fan of women’s volleyball. He was always ready to show future students and families around the campus. Upon his death in 1989, his family established the Arlyn W. and Sandra L. Gravunder Scholarship to honor his love of UW-Eau Claire students and athletics. Sandra Gravunder received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UW-Eau Claire and taught in the Business Education Department at Chippewa Valley Technical College from 1969-2001.

'Arnie' Domer was a true self-made man. Through years of dedication and effort, he surmounted humble beginnings and many obstacles, eventually working his way to a position of exceptional success and esteem in the Eau Claire community. He and his wife Lois were the founders of Arnie's Ski & Garden Center. He was a hard-driving businessman with a very soft heart, especially for animals and for young people. Arnie believed in loyalty, honesty and hard work, and his life was a living example of all three.

Once they achieved their hard-earned success, Arnie and Lois were committed to the goal of reaching back to help young people reach their aspirations. This scholarship honors and celebrates the life of Arnie Domer through its support of a young person who demonstrates the attributes he so deeply valued.

One year's award does not automatically qualify one for a subsequent award. A scholarship recipient may re-apply in a subsequent year if they still meet the award criteria.

This scholarship honors the life of Artise S. Patrick (1936-2005). Artise was the mother of University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire alumni, Lisa (Patrick) Redfearn Class of 1979. Lisa initially followed in the footsteps of her mother and received a bachelor’s degree in Science majoring in Elementary and Special Education and became a teacher in Florida. Lisa chose to name this scholarship after her mother, a woman who taught Lisa so much about life, honor and respect of all people, which ultimately led to Lisa’s career change to Clinical Social Work.

Artise, originally from Edina, Minnesota, taught Special Education for over 40 years in Wisconsin, predominantly in the Menomonee Falls School District. She was a pioneer of teaching methods and created curriculum for her mentally handicapped students, long before there was a notion to educate mentally handicapped children in a public-school setting. Artise assisted not only her students, but their families while working closely with her colleagues in a team approach.

Artise knew her students were children with many strengths and the ability to learn despite their handicaps. She always saw the potential in each child and expected her students to grow and learn in whatever way was appropriate for them... she was innovative and practical. She expertly adapted materials and equipment to help meet their needs and provided the least restrictive environment before this was mandated in Special Education, through a federal law, PL 94-142 of 1975. In fact, Wisconsin’s state education system was ahead of the federal law mandate and Artise assisted a state team in putting together a similar state law before PL 94-142 was implemented in the country. She assisted the parents of her students by providing guidance, parenting strategies and reinforced a team approach to educating her students. Artise was loved by her students and their families.

She was a force to be reckoned with and advocated for her students in many ways, which earned tremendous respect from her colleagues, the Menomonee Falls School District, the community and the state of Wisconsin, which resulted in many awards and accolades throughout her career. She was Teacher of the Year many times over and was highlighted in a local documentary on a Milwaukee television station. Artise was an excellent teacher who taught from her heart, for the love of the children, and not for the accolades. She had a truly successful career!

Her husband, three children, extended family and friends loved her dearly and this scholarship is offered to a University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire student of Social Work or Education as a tribute to Artise S. Patrick.

This scholarship is for students taking classes at UW-Eau Claire - Barron County. It is awarded to a continuing full-time student pursuing art as a career or for personal enrichment. Being a former or current ArtScape on Main contributor is a plus.

In order to be considered for this scholarship an application must be submitted by February 1. Attendance at ArtScape on Main unveiling on April 9, 2019, and participating in ArtScape on Main activities is expected of the winner.

Recipient must demonstrate financial need as required by the UW-Eau Claire Foundation's scholarship award standards.

There are three categories for consideration. Check each one for renewal process. There is no academic major requirements for any of these categories.

First priority is for the annual scholarship to go to any descendants of Thusnelda and Walter Richards and Beverly and William Atherton. Any Richards/Atherton descendants interested in being considered will be responsible for identifying themselves in writing to the UW-Eau Claire Dean of Students office with the request they be considered for the scholarship. Individuals accepted to UW-Eau Claire who have been recommended by the Athertons also should receive consideration.

Second priority shall be given to a student accepted to UW-Eau Claire who specifically states in writing at the time of their acceptance that they would like to be considered for the Atherton Family Scholarship. If the scholarship as awarded to a student matching either of these criteria it may be renewed for three years provided the recipient remains enrolled at UW-Eau Claire, maintains satisfactory academic progress and there are no other qualified recipients.

If there are no students who qualify under the preceding two criteria, the scholarship may be awarded to an outstanding UW-Eau Claire student participating in the Blugold Marching Band, who shall be selected by the band director. The student must be in at least their second year as a member, exhibit a passion for the band, and have strong leadership qualities. The scholarship in this category is not intended to be renewed.

Dr. Bryan was a member of the School of Nursing faculty from 1987 until her death in 2001. Audrey was an enthusiastic pediatric nurse practitioner, a passionate educator, and a dedicated researcher. If they didn't, we would never let them go to learn new things, to do new things....to become the person they will become," she said.

This scholarship was established in 1988 following the death of Barbara Brenner Tremble, a 1984 nursing graduate who died of cystic fibrosis. Despite battling the disease her entire life, she was dedicated to learning and was a positive influence on all those around her. She valued the importance of maintaining and making the most of good health.

This scholarship has a primary preference for graduate from Green Bay Preble High School who is planning to study in Communications or Journalism. If no student meets this criteria, the scholarship will not be awarded that year and will be available for the next academic year.

Donor Background:

Dr. Barbara Ložar joined the department of psychology faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1972. She was one of the first women to chair a department in the College of Arts and Sciences and was a leader in most of the curricular initiatives that took place during her tenure at UW-Eau Claire.

Dr. Ložar was a scholar, through and through. Hers was a life of continual learning, and of promoting the learning of others. She was as committed to the success of her first year at-risk students, as she was to the success of her graduate students.

Her deep interest in learners who use English as a second language arose from her own history of entering junior high school in the United States, speaking no English. A self-taught English speaker, she developed a command of the language that few native speakers ever achieve.

Dr. Ložar dedicated her entire adult life to serving the University and its psychology department tirelessly and with unfailing dedication. Her love of learning, her passion for the University, and her contributions to the University community were unsurpassed.

Dr. Ložar passed away in 2011. After nearly four decades of continuous service, she was among the longest serving members of the faculty. Family, colleagues, alumni, and friends established the Barbara Ložar Memorial Psychology Scholarship to honor her legacy.

This scholarship was established to honor the memory of Beverly and R. Dale Dick.

Beverly graduated from Stephen's College in Columbia, Missouri in 1952, majoring in voice. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York in 1955, where she was awarded the Performer's Certificate. She obtained her Master of Arts in Music from the University of Missouri in 1958. She began her career as a musician as director of music at the First Presbyterian Church in Hays, Kansas. She presented voice solos at Fort Hays Kansas State College and in churches in the community, while also teaching voice students privately. In 1967, she joined the UW-Eau Claire faculty as instructor and later as an assistant professor of Music. She taught voice, voice pedagogy, voice literature and performance practice. She performed soprano roles in recitals and oratorios and other programs at the university and in other venues in the Eau Claire community. She retired from the university in 1998. Known as a talented performer and voice coach, she was loved by her students as a professional mentor and role model.

Dale graduated from Northwestern University in 1952 with a Bachelors of Science in Psychology and obtained his Masters and PhD in Psychology from the University of Missouri in 1958. He started his teaching career as an assistant professor of psychology at Fort Hays Kansas State College in 1958. He was promoted to associate professor in 1962 and to full professor in 1964. He and Beverly came to UW-Eau Claire in 1966 where he continued his career as the dean of the graduate school until 1981 and as a professor of psychology until his retirement in 1998. Dr. Dick was known as a tough professor, but was admired, respected and loved by students and colleagues. He enjoyed learning about any topic, teaching, woodworking and sailing.

Beverly and Dale were married in June of 1955. They had two sons, Gregory and Jeffrey, and seven grandchildren.

If there were one phrase capturing the professional life of Bill Meiser, it would be his innate passion for teaching and coaching, for instilling in his students the value of every child’s, every adolescent’s capacity to learn. Although grounded in research and experience, his creative and innovative approaches seemed to flow from a magical formula that honored both diversity and individuality, providing a model for students and athletes as they progressed to their goals as future educators. His mentorship, whether in a classroom, on the field, in his office (and sometimes his back yard,) influenced both their personal and professional lives, fostering relationships with Bill long after they left campus. For those who wonder if there is a legacy in teaching, absolutely yes.

In 1960, Bill Meiser received a bachelor’s degree in physical education at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where he also began his education in athletic training and sports injuries. Though prepared to teach physical education and coach at all levels, his primary emphasis was elementary education, which remained a major focus throughout his career. He taught Physical Education K-12 and coached all sports at Fall River WI School District until 1964, when he returned to graduate school.

During his master’s degree program at the University of Colorado-Boulder, Bill once again worked as an athletic trainer, this time for the Colorado Buffalo’s football team. He later did additional graduate work at the University of Oregon, concentrating on anatomy, the application into athletic training and sports injuries.

Bill returned to Wisconsin as Coordinator of Elementary Physical Education for the Eau Claire Public Schools. In 1968, he joined the faculty at UW-Eau Claire, where he retired as associate professor of Kinesiology in 1997. During his 29 years at UW-EC, his primary responsibility was the preparation of teachers. His areas of expertise included curriculum and instruction in elementary physical education, health, and athletic training. In 1968, Bill initiated what is today’s Athletic Training Program, serving as its coordinator until 1977. He also became UW-EC’s head coach for track and field.

Between 1972 and 1985, together with assistant coach Keith Daniels and graduate assistant Randy Wilber, Bill guided the track and field program from last in conference to steady improvement. Beginning in 1978, UWEC athletes were competitive enough to qualify for participation in national championships in Cross Country, Indoor Track and Outdoor Track, with Bill Langhout emerging as the Blugolds first national champion (marathon) in 1980. Many consider these coaches’ progress to be the foundation of today’s program, which has continued a tradition of success in conference and national competition.

Believing in community outreach, Bill initiated the All-Comers summer track meets for the Eau Claire area, bringing participants of all ages to campus. He was also a founding member of the Indianhead Track Club, again welcoming anyone with an interest in the field. With colleagues, Mary Mero and Bob Scott, the Kids’ Summer Gymnastics/Swimming program, Bill as swimming coordinator and instructor, took its place among summer’s community activities at McPhee. His expertise in the prevention and treatment of sports injuries also found its way into area high schools, where coaches and young athletes found Bill a valuable resource.

His interest in cognition and motor skill development led Bill to Lincoln Elementary School, specifically to their limited English Pre-K Hmong children. Would combining age-appropriate physical activities enhance second language development? He also taught these children how to fish with cane poles off the Madison Street Bridge. A story cloth by these Hmong mothers is a family treasure.

If there were a single philosophy underlying his teaching career, it was his firm belief that all children can learn, thus approaching teaching as a wholistic process. Similarly, in coaching, he understood the development of young adults, a concern for the emotional and mental impact of competing. In brief, he knew not just the mechanics of sports, but which approaches promote or deter learning.

Bill’s teaching career was marked by a devotion to excellence in education, and through his students, to improving the quality of life for children and adults in the community. Former students recall the ways he provided a model for working with people in a wide range of challenging situations, his enthusiasm, his creative and innovative teaching methods, as well as his ability to instill a sense of self-worth and confidence in achieving their goals.

Outside of UW-EC, and in keeping with his career, Bill mentored high school and college students working at Treeland’s Resort, where he managed the resort’s boathouse and started a Tots’ Fishing Trip for guests’ children. An early internet enthusiast, he managed the resort’s website and provided weekly fishing reports for the Chippewa Flowage. The website also became a landing spot for his nature photography of the Flowage. An avid and successful musky hunter, Bill enjoyed all the outdoor activities in season: bow-hunting deer, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling on frozen Lake Chippewa.

A personal and professional life well-lived, Bill Meiser died from a brain tumor in the fall of 2009.

The Meiser Coaching Scholarship awards outstanding achievement in KINS 492, the practicum required of coaching minors. The award will be presented at the completion of KINS 492 to a student fulfilling the course requirements “above and beyond” in his or her completed portfolio. Successful students will have demonstrated leadership, creative and innovative thinking, and the ability to take a deep dive into researching new approaches for teaching and coaching in their sport. Further, the successful student will have shown their ability to interact and connect with young athletes in meaningful ways: understanding adolescent development and the impact of competing at a specific grade level; coaching being more than the mechanics of sport; and respect for individual differences.

Recipients must be junior or seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in major/minor courses and be completing a practicum outside of UW-Eau Claire.

The UW-Eau Claire Materials Science and Biomedical Engineering Department faculty are pleased to offer this need-based scholarship for BME majors. The scholarship is paid in semester installments of $500 each for up to four semesters total. To receive the scholarship for each of the four semesters, the student must remain a BME major, and must maintain good academic standing and an overall GPA of at least 2.5. The Materials Science and Biomedical Engineering Department plans to award one scholarship each school year.

The fellowship is available to all BME students who have financial need as determined by the FAFSA, and who have maintained a cumulative GPA of 2.5. Materials Science and Biomedical Engineering faculty will select a recipient from among eligible applicants based on student engagement in BME, future plans, level of financial need, and academic performance, although the latter is not a primary factor for consideration.

Blake grew up in Eau Claire working through high school and college at the local Greyhound Bus Depot to pay his way through college. Blake has had successful career working at KPMG in the Twin Cities for nine years and working the last 20+ years at the Toro Company in Bloomington. He currently is the VP, Global Operations for this $3B+ company. He believes that his experiences at UW-Eau Claire are one of the key drivers of his success. The Multicultural Student Services faculty may require the recipient to also complete tutoring or mentoring activities during the year in which the award is made. The Multicultural Student Services office will be responsible for monitoring this activity and determining if the recipient has fulfilled their obligation.

Donor Background:

'Arnie' Domer was a true self-made man. Through years of dedication and effort, he surmounted humble beginnings and many obstacles, eventually working his way to a position of exceptional success and esteem in the Eau Claire community. He and his wife Lois were the founders of Arnie's Ski and Garden Center. He was a hard-driving businessman with a very soft heart, especially for animals and young people. Arnie believed in loyalty, honesty and hard work, and his life was a living example of all three.

Once they achieved their hard-earned success, Arnie and Lois were committed to the goal of reaching back to help young people achieve their aspirations. This scholarship honors and celebrates the life of Arnie Domer through its support of a young person who demonstrates the attributes he so deeply valued.

Arnie died in 2004 and Lois died in 2008.

This scholarship is available to a high-achieving incoming UW-Eau Claire student who has indicated plans to pursue pre-medicine or pre-health science aligned with the mission of the Mayo Clinic Health System. Recipients will demonstrate a strong potential for academic success in their undergraduate courses as well as a sincere passion for a career in medicine or health science areas.

The scholarship also provides the recipient with access to a Mayo research experience during their UW-Eau Claire career. As part of the renewal process, the recipient will also be asked to submit a short essay explaining the impact of research on their academic success and career plans. The recipient will be recognized at various activities and programs connected to the UW-Eau Claire/Mayo Research Collaboration and be asked to speak annually about their research and academic activity. At least once during the time when the student holds the scholarship, they will be a guest of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation Board to present their research.

Recipients who continue to demonstrate commitment to pursuing a degree and career path in the health care or biomedical fields and a 3.5 GPA will be eligible for renewals at $8,000 each year for three more years.

Please note that COVID-19 and flu vaccinations are mandatory for any student activity on Mayo Clinic Health System grounds. Biomedical Innovator Scholars will be required to provide proof of vaccination to participate in activities in Mayo Clinic Health System facilities. A choice not to vaccinate does not affect eligibility for the scholarship, but it will limit the student’s ability to participate in Mayo hosted programming.

This scholarship will be awarded to academically talented and motivated incoming freshmen. The awards will promote educational opportunities and encourage gifted academic leaders who are interested in majoring in geology.

Students who are majoring in Geology and have a demonstrated aptitude for the physical sciences will be considered for this scholarship. Candidates must rank in the top 25% of their graduating class or have a GPA of 3.0 or greater.

Preference will be given to candidates who show a strong academic record, involvement in extracurricular activities, and outstanding leadership potential.

These are one-year awards, but if recipients maintain a minimum of a 3.2 GPA, successfully complete an introductory geology laboratory class (meaning one of the following: Earth Science, Physical Geology, Environmental Geology, or Societal Issues in Earth Science), and continue to make satisfactory progress toward a degree in geology, they will be eligible to apply for other Geology scholarships for their sophomore year.

There are no GPA, credit standing, or major requirements other than the submission being from a Critical Studies course. The Bob Nowlan Critical Studies Scholarship celebrates the analytic and illuminating interventions of one the English Department’s first faculty members in the Theory, Popular Culture and Film emphasis. Professor Nowlan taught at UWEC for 26 years, and in that time built profoundly enriching experiences and spaces for students to explore their critical thinking, creativity, and advocated for raising awareness on mental health and disability issues. Dr. Nowlan often wove his passion for music into his courses and was also the host and producer of the weekly radio show Insurgence, which first aired on WHYS 96.3 in 2005. Insurgence provided a platform for post-punk and indie music, especially from the British Isles, and progressive music of protest, struggle, and resistance.

This scholarship was established by William and Diane Stark through the Bobby Stark Foundation. Bobby was born on January 1, 1988, as the youngest son of Bill and Diane Stark. He was a senior at North Canyon High School and was going to graduate in May 2006, but tragically lost his life on February 11 of that year, at the young age of 18.

Bobby was a young man who had a talent for making everyone around him feel better. He had a quick and infectious smile that made everyone who met him feel at home, and he was comfortable speaking with anyone -- whether they were 6 or 70.

Brad Hall graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1998 with a bachelor of business administration degree in accounting and his wife Kathy (Heidt) Hall transferred after her sophomore year to the University of Minnesota to complete a bachelor of science degree in nutrition. Brad is currently vice president and treasurer at Carlson Companies and Kathy is a registered dietician at Hennepin County Medical Center.

Scholarships allowed Brad to focus intently on academics and participate in extracurricular activities including track and field and various academic organizations. Brad and Kathy hope this scholarship will allow others to obtain a first-rate and well-rounded educational experience.

One award per year to an outstanding music education major from any of the Waukesha or Chippewa Falls High Schools. The recipient shall be selected by the music education faculty scholarship committee. Should there be a year where there are no music education students from Waukesha or Chippewa Falls, the scholarship will not be awarded. It is the donors' intent that the music education faculty view this scholarship as a resource to attract and retain more outstanding and qualified music education majors from these high schools.

Eligible students must be planning to become music teachers, be active participants and leaders in music and teaching, serve as positive role models for their peers, and inspire those around them to higher levels of achievement.

This scholarship may be renewed for additional years, provided the recipient send a letter to the music education faculty scholarship committee requesting the scholarship be renewed and providing additional information on their activities and continued leadership as a music education major.

Branden Atherton was an outstanding senior music education major and student leader when he was killed on his 24th birthday in the October 16, 2005, collision of a bus carrying Chippewa Falls High School marching band members, teachers, chaperones and family members. This scholarship was established through memorial gifts received as a tribute to Branden's life and his role as a student leader who inspired those around him to great achievement.

Paul and Mary Erickson ('86) created this scholarship in honor of Brett and Nick (Class of 2015) Erickson; two such siblings. One with autism and the other who embraced the challenges and opportunities; the two are best friends. This Blugold couple has created a legacy of giving back because of a true passion to help others. Both Paul and Mary majored in Journalism and their son Nick will soon graduate from UW-Eau Claire.

This fund will be used to provide scholarships or study grants to students in the department of philosophy and religious studies to help them achieve a goal to travel abroad. Preference will be given to students pursuing a major or minor in the department, however students pursuing a certificate are also eligible. Recipients need not be participating in the university's formal study abroad program. Rather, these funds may be awarded to students who submit proposals for travel and study.

Priority for selection shall include the fervent desire to travel and use those experiences to further academic pursuits or professional plans and academic excellence as current students. The intent of this award is for the recipient to plan their trip abroad with the determination and desire to absorb and gain the fullest benefit possible from that particular international experience.

Applicants may be allowed up to six months following graduation to submit to the Foundation their request for funds.

Donor Background:

This fund was established in memory of Dr. Bruce Jannusch, professor emeritus of philosophy and religious studies, who died February 11, 2010. Bruce retired from UW-Eau Claire in 1997 after 29 years of teaching in the department and serving as department chair for six years.

Marlene was a faculty member at Mount Scenario College in Ladysmith, WI, for 28 years and chaired the department of teacher education for eight. She also sat on the MSC Board of Trustees. Marlene's original commentaries aired on Wisconsin Public Radio for 10 years. She has published two books and authored numerous professional articles and social commentaries.

This scholarship was established in memory of Carol Krohn. Carol graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. All her life, she wanted to be an English teacher. She was teaching English and coaching drama at Royall High School when she was killed on the south of Eau Claire on Good Friday in 1972. She was 23 at the time of her death. Scholarship funds were established in her memory at UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stevens Point for Royall High School graduates.

In 2004, the Cassandra Ball Egdahl Scholarship for exceptional music students was established with a $25,000 estate gift from Harry Egdahl in honor of his first wife, Cassandra Ball Egdahl, who died in 1957. The fund provides scholarships to students who participate in the UW-Eau Claire Holiday Concert, the university’s annual holiday gift to the community, featuring various UW-Eau Claire music ensembles.

Over his 70-year career in dentistry, Dr. Harry Egdahl was president of the Northwest District Dental Society, regularly attended local and state dental society meetings, and was a member of the“Black” club of dentists who were skilled in the use of gold foil in dental practice. A native of the Chippewa Bottoms area in Wisconsin, he was a WWI U.S. Army veteran, a member of Eau Claire Lodge 112 F&AM, Eau Claire Scottish Rite, Eau Claire Chapter 36 Royal Arch Masons, Eau Claire Commandery 8 Knights Templar, and a member of First Lutheran Church. He was an avid bridge player and enjoyed fishing in Wisconsin lakes and Lake of the Woods in Canada.

Rebecca Cassandra Ball was born on April 19, 1895, in Harlan, Kentucky. After receiving her college degree at the University of Minnesota, she came to Eau Claire in 1921 as a school teacher where she eventually met and married Dr. Harry I Egdahl. “Cass” Egdahl was especially fond of and talented in music. She enjoyed attending concerts of the Minneapolis Symphony. Her fine voice was adept to a wide variety of music genres of which she often sang and played on the piano. Saturday afternoons found her faithfully listening on the radio to the performances of the Metropolitan Opera.

Dr. Richard H. Egdahl, son of the late Harry Egdahl and Cassandra Ball Egdahl, provided a gift $100,000 to the Cassandra Ball Egdahl Music Scholarship in 2006 as a way to extend his father’s wishes to honor Richard’s mother in this way. Richard Egdahl, a graduate from Eau Claire High School, served in the Naval Reserve during WWII, and went on to graduate with a medical degree from Harvard University Medical School and a doctoral degree from the University of Minnesota. Richard Egdahl has enjoyed a successful career as a surgeon, administrator and researcher at Boston University‘s School of Medicine. He has also served as director of the Health Care Entrepreneurship Program.

The UW-Eau Claire Music and Theatre Arts department is the largest music program in the state of Wisconsin, receiving national recognition annually. The Cassandra Ball Egdahl Music Scholarship continues to help bring exceptional music students to our university.

The Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program will award an undergraduate WGSS major whose scholarship and/or activism uses transnational feminism as a tool of analysis and/or organizing. The recipient's scholarship and/or activism will reflect Chandra Talpade Mohanty's work on transnational feminism and social justice, especially women, gender, and sexuality issues among communities of color in the U.S. or in the global south.

In addition to the scholarship, the recipient will receive a book authored by Mohanty.

Applicants should submit a 400-500 word essay describing how their scholarship or activism reflects Chandra Talpade Mohanty’s work on transnational feminism and social justice, focusing on issues related to women, gender, and sexuality in communities of color in the U.S. or in the global south.

Chandra Talpade Mohanty is a Distinguished Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies and Dean’s Professor of the Humanities at Syracuse University. Her pioneering work in the field of transnational feminism focuses on transnational feminist theory, anti-capitalist feminist praxis, anti-racist education, and the politics of knowledge. She is the author of Feminism Without Borders: Decolonizing Theory, Practicing Solidarity and Feminist Genealogies, Colonial Legacies, Democratic Futures, among others.

This scholarship was established by Dr. Rose-Marie Avin during the academic year 2018-2019. Dr. Avin believes that it was important to honor the work of Professor Chandra Mohanty who has amplified the voices of the marginalized, especially the voices of women from the Global South. Like Professor Mohanty, Dr. Avin has also tried to amplify the voices of women in the Global South by developing a course entitled “Women and Economic Development,” and an international immersion program in Nicaragua entitled “Lives and Experiences of Women in Nicaragua.”

Dr. Charles D. Hanson grew up on a farm near Arcadia, WI and graduated from Wisconsin State University-Eau Claire in 1966. He started his career as an English teacher at Wauwatosa West High School in Wauwatosa, WI. He later transitioned to a successful career as a librarian, eventually serving as the long-time director of library sciences at Kettering University in Flint, Michigan. He served as a U.S. delegate to the World Library Congress and was president of the Friends of Michigan Libraries. Charles attributes much of his success to the educational foundation he received at UW-Eau Claire, crediting the influence of professors Lester Gilbertson, Caldwell Johnson, Helen Sampson, John Morris and Grace Walsh.

Knowing how demanding the nursing curriculum can be and how finances can pose challenges for many students, Cindy started Cindy's Nursing Scholarship to support a junior nursing student who has financial need and shows promise in the field.

Cindy spent much of her nursing career working at Jennie-O Turkey Store, a division of Hormel Foods, as a nurse consultant for injured employees and a risk manager. She has a strong background and interest in public health. She is retired, lives in Chetek, WI and volunteers on the Ice Age Trail.

Clara B. Small was born Clara Lucie Boie in Red Lake Falls, Minnesota, in 1898, the second of five daughters of French-Canadian descent. Clara and her family moved west, following her father’s lumbering and construction jobs, moving from Sand Point and Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; LaGrande and finally Portland, Oregon. She left high school after her sophomore year to help support the family as a milliner’s apprentice at the beginning of World War 1; in 1916 she married John Small and moved to his farm in Willamette Valley near Silverton, Oregon, where she lived for the rest of her life.

Although she never went back to school, she studied voice privately for some years (she liked sad songs best) and read voraciously - old and new classics (her favorites remained Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina and Scott’s “Lady of the Lake”), history, theology, popular literature, current event - and eventually she read nearly every high school and college text her daughter brought home.

The Clara B. Small memorial scholarships for nontraditional students were established shortly after her death in 1980 by her daughter and son-in-law, UW-Eau Claire emeriti professors Nadine S. and Robert V. St Louis, to stand as fitting tribute to this woman who, in all her 82 years, never stopped learning.

This scholarship is available to a high-achieving incoming UW-Eau Claire student who has indicated plans to pursue a degree and career path in the health, human well being, or biomedical field. Recipients will demonstrate a strong potential for academic success in their undergraduate courses as well as a sincere passion for a career in medicine or health science areas.

The scholarship also provides the recipient with access to a Mayo research experience during their UW-Eau Claire career. As part of the renewal process, the recipient will also be asked to submit a short essay explaining the impact of research on their academic success and career plans. The recipient will be recognized at various activities and programs connected to the UW-Eau Claire/Mayo Research Collaboration and be asked to speak annually about their research and academic activity. At least once during the time when the student holds the scholarship, they will be a guest of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation Board to present their research.

Recipients who continue to demonstrate commitment to pursuing a career in the health or biomedical fields, a 3.5 GPA, and continue to pursue a career path in a healthcare or biomedical field, will be eligible for renewals at $8,000 each year for three more years.

Please note that COVID-19 and flu vaccinations are mandatory for any student activity on Mayo Clinic Health System grounds. Biomedical Innovator Scholars will be required to provide proof of vaccination to participate in activities in Mayo Clinic Health System facilities. The David and Lynne Leuthe Scholarship Fund was established in 2019. David and Lynne both attended UW-Eau Claire and met there. David graduated in 1962 with a BS degree in Geography and Social Studies. He returned a few years later to study for his teaching certificate, and subsequently taught Economics and History for 30 years at Central High School in La Crosse, Wisconsin. Lynne worked as a Medical Technologist at St. Francis Hospital and at Skemp Clinic (now Mayo Clinic Health System) in La Crosse and managed their rental property there.

David and Lynne fished commercially for salmon every summer for 30 years in Cook Inlet, Alaska, out of Kenai, Alaska. After selling their fish boat in 1999 they returned to Alaska as tourists in the summer, eventually totaling 50 summers in Alaska. David published a book about their experiences in Alaska called The 50-Year Summer.

David passed away in 2015. He and Lynne had often talked about funding a scholarship at UW-Eau Claire, and she went ahead with it after he passed. They both felt that a good liberal arts education is the best gift we can give children. It broadens and enriches their lives and gives them the means to care for themselves and their families throughout their lifetimes. Lynne gives her best wishes to the young people who are awarded this scholarship.

David G. Anderson has had a long career as one of Eau Claire’s leading attorneys, retiring as a senior partner of Ruder Ware in Eau Claire. A 1966 UW-Eau Claire graduate, Dave has been an impactful leader in so many areas of the University. He is a former chair of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation Board, leading it through staff and university leadership transitions. He was instrumental in assisting the Foundation in its early foray into real estate, providing legal counsel through the Blugold Real Estate Foundation’s acquisition of the Priory, development of Haymarket Landing and the early work with the Sonnentag Project.

Dave also has been an instructor in economics and business law at the University. A 1969 graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School, Dave has been active in legal organizations at the university and through the Wisconsin Bar Association. A review of his service to the community shows he has served as president and/or board chair for many community and service organizations in Eau Claire. Dave received the Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award from the UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association in 2005.

Carol L. Anderson, a Green Bay native, met Dave at the University of Wisconsin where she graduated with a BA in Social Work. She later earned a minor in Library Science (CMED) from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and received the Ursula Emery Award. Upon completing her minor, she worked as a Library Associate at the L. E. Phillips Memorial Public Library for 23 years. Carol has been active in the Eau Claire Community Foundation’s Women’s Giving Circle, as well as having been a Past President of the Eau Claire Service League and the P.E.O. Chapter CH. Carol has been involved in volunteer work most of her life. Carol and Dave have been generous supporters of many causes and projects in the Eau Claire Community.

This scholarship will be awarded to a Chippewa Falls High School graduate who is pursuing a major in the College of Business. Donor Background:

This endowed scholarship was established in 2018 by David L. Risch (UW-Eau Claire Geology '78) of Katy, Texas, to be first awarded in the 2019-2020 academic year.

After receiving a BS in Geology and Physics at UW-Eau Claire in 1978, David earned an MS in Oceanography at Texas A&M in 1982. He began his 31-year career in the energy industry as an exploration geophysicist initially with Phillips Petroleum Co, then Schlumberger, and retired from BHP Petroleum in 2013.

David’s motivation to establish the scholarship was based in part on his academic experiences at UWEC and Texas A&M. Though David appreciated his UW-Eau Claire education, he would have benefited greatly from student-faculty collaborative research, which would have provided a strong base for pursuit of his graduate degree in Oceanography at Texas A&M.

With this scholarship, David wanted to encourage the excellent research being done at UW-Eau Claire because our understanding of the earth through research is fundamental to resource discovery and proper management. In addition, the skills developed doing research and presenting it will serve the student well during the student's career.

This scholarship will be awarded annually to the returning player on the Men's Club Volleyball Team who exemplifies the "glue guy" spirit. A glue guy is a team member who through his drive, tenaciousness, and team play makes all the players around him better and sacrifices individual acclaim for collective achievement. The glue guy is someone everybody on the team counts on to do the dirty work: make the dig play, have a run of successful serves, and set up the hitters for the kill shot. Teams cannot reach their fullest potential without such a player. The recipient will be voted on by the team and the scholarship will be applied for the following school year.

Scholarship Background:

David Radowski was a proud 2007 graduate of UW-Eau Claire. During his time at UW-Eau Claire, David was active across campus, but perhaps most connected to the Men's Club Volleyball program. David made many lifelong friendships through his participation with the club volleyball team and maintained many of these relationships beyond his graduation. During his time with the club, the team excelled and even participated in the national tournament. David was not the most valuable player when he played on the team from 2004-2008, but he exemplified being a glue guy. Following his untimely passing in 2021, David's family established this scholarship to remember him.

Sandra Lucas David graduated with a degree in education in 1981. She was fortunate enough to have parents who understood the value of education and worked hard to save money so she could attend college. Sandy worked and was lucky to receive a few scholarships to help defer the cost of tuition. She went on to live in Oak Ridge Hall and participated in hall and recreational campus activities. Eventually, the Special Education program required that students participate in community service and involvement with individuals with special needs. Volunteering and philanthropy have been a critical part of Sandy's life since.

Sandy is retired from teaching middle and high school special education for students with learning disabilities. Over the years, she always believed the education she received at UW-Eau Claire best prepared her to help her students meet their full potential. Debra L. Rasmussen was a 1976 Nursing graduate at UW-Eau Claire. Deb received a 4-year scholarship from Rhinelander High School to come to UW-Eau Claire. Deb met Dane, her husband, on campus while they both were taking summer courses. They saw the impact that the scholarship had on her UW-Eau Claire student career. Deb was a nurse for over 20 years at University of Minnesota Hospital where she provided care in the oncology department. Deb and Dane’s daughter has now followed Deb’s footsteps and works as a nurse in the oncology department, where a lot of the nurses knew and worked with Deb. Deb and Dane raised their family in Baldwin, Wisconsin. Baldwin has always been an important part of their story. Deb was on the school board in Baldwin and would be proud to support Baldwin-Woodville graduates that are going to UW-Eau Claire.

Students must enroll in at least 12 credits of STEM and/or Business Finance courses during the semester the scholarship is received. The scholarship recipient must have a GPA of 3.1 or higher and be of senior status. This scholarship is non-renewable and can only be received once by a student.

This scholarship will award one student $5,200 in the Fall semester. And another student will be awarded $5,200 in the Spring semester.

New, entering students who are from historically excluded racial and ethnic populations or are economically disadvantaged are eligible, with priority given to students who have successfully completed the Blugold Beginnings Program. The recipient must be enrolled full-time to receive any award amount.

The award is renewable for an additional three years, for a total of up to $24,000. However, recipients must maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and complete at least three-fourths of enrolled credits. The Diversity Scholars supersedes other UW-Eau Claire Foundation scholarships (i.e. Freshman Honors, Diversity Achievement) you may have been previously awarded; the smaller award will be designated to an alternate.

This scholarships is available to students who are active in the Hmong Student Association, who have a strong academic record, show potential for success in college and demonstrate financial need. This scholarship is renewable, for up to three years of funding, provided the recipient continues to demonstrate academic success. Typically, a sophomore will be chosen in every even-numbered year.

Donor Background:

Don and Jan Etnier have assisted the Hmong throughout the Chippewa Valley in numerous ways for more than 30 years. Jan was the first tutor for the first Hmong student to graduate from UW-Eau Claire, who went on to become the assistant director of Multicultural Affairs. Their church has sponsored many Hmong families and helped them resettle to the Chippewa Valley. Don was on the Board of Directors of the Hmong Mutual Assistance Association and was the campaign treasurer for the late Joe Bee Xiong, when he ran for the Assembly in 2004. Jan was on the Christmas Food Committee and persuaded the Salvation Army to provide food that is part of the Hmong diet. The Etniers are true "volunteers".

A variable number of scholarships available.

This scholarship is for students taking classes at UW-Eau Claire - Barron County. It is awarded to first year or continuing full-time students who are active in the community and/or school activities. A high school rank in the top 50% or a GPA of at least 3.00 is desired, but these requirements can be overlooked if effort is evident and other criteria are met.

Recipient must demonstrate financial need as required by the UW-Eau Claire Barron County Foundation's scholarship award standards.

All Wisconsin Academic Excellence Scholars are eligible for this scholarship. If a Wisconsin Academic Excellence Scholar decides to attend UW-Eau Claire, they are awarded a $1,000 Wisconsin Academic Excellence Scholarship which is then matched by the state of Wisconsin in the amount of $1,250.

This scholarship was created by Donald and Elfreida Franzmann and endowed through their estate gifts.

Awarded to an outstanding incoming freshman student who has  been accepted for admission to UW-Eau Claire and demonstrates significant financial need as verified by Financial Aid.

Preference is for a qualified student from the south metro Twin Cities area. If there is not a student who meets that preference, then any qualified student can be awarded.

To be considered, students must rank in the top 25% of their graduating classes and have a minimum of a 25 composite on the ACT (or comparable SAT), have a well- rounded high school record of academic achievement, leadership and involvement in extracurricular activities. In general a student who has a zest for life and a desire to get the most out of their college education will receive primary consideration.

$1,000 award available for freshman year. Recipients who have a successful freshman year and maintain good academic standing, according to the standards at UW-Eau Claire, by the end of their first year will receive a $1,000 scholarship their sophomore year.

Donor Background:

Donald L. Wolfarth held a teaching position in the speech department at UW-Eau Claire from 1967 until his retirement in 1988. He was active as a judge in the various high school and college debate and forensics events held on campus. Before working the speech department, he studied with the American Institute of Parliamentarian. In 1969, he created the parliamentary procedure course. Professor Wolfarth's department chair said of him: "Don was outstanding as a scholar, teacher and colleague. But he was extraordinary as a friend."

This scholarship is available to full-time economics majors and minors. Students must be junior or senior status and have completed nine credits of economics courses. An overall GPA and economics GPA of 3.0 is required.

Preference will be given to students who demonstrate involvement in student activities, community service and government, and the arts.

Donor Background:

This scholarship was created in 2018 through contributions from Dr. Ellickson's family, friends, and colleagues.

Dr. Ellickson taught in the UW-Eau Claire Economics Department from 1958 until his retirement in 1994. He was appointed chair of the department in 1967 and served in that capacity until 1990. He was an adviser for the Economics Honor Society and the Young Republicans.

Dr. Ellickson was involved in service to his community through civics and strong advocacy in the areas of human services and eldercare. He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Foundation Board of Directors, the City of Eau Claire Bus Transportation Committee, and the Zoning Appeals Board.

In retirement, he was a member of the Eau Claire County Board from 1994 until 2008 and enjoyed volunteering for the Community Table.

This scholarship was established in memory of Donna E. Selin, a former first grade teacher who taught for 35 years in the Eau Claire area. Donna, who died November 12, 2012, was the beloved wife of long-time accounting professor J. Roger Selin. They were married for 46 years.

Scholarship Background:

The Dorothea Bobb Blugold Promise Scholarship fund was established with memorial gifts received following the death of Mrs. Bobb on June 3, 2006. While she never was able to attend college, she placed a high value on a college education and loved UW-Eau Claire.

First preference is for a graduate from Ladysmith High School, second preference for a graduate of a high school within Rusk County. If no students are available, the scholarship will remain unawarded.

Doug Weisenberger is a 1979 UW-Eau Claire graduate who earned both a business degree, and master's of business administration degree. He works as a financial planner and senior partner with North Star Resource Group in Madison.

Kimberlie Meyer-Weisenberger graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1980 with an art degree.

The couple resides in Oregon, WI, and are proud parents. They see the great value of a college education and want to make sure that a degree is attainable for future Blugolds.

Two scholarships of $1,500 are available.

This scholarship will be awarded to an incoming freshman student with a declared major in journalism. Recipient must demonstrate financial need as verified by the UW-Eau Claire Financial Aid office. Preference will be given to students who are underserved, underrepresented, or first-generation college students.

This $1,500 award is renewable for three additional years provided the student continues pursuing a degree in journalism and remains in good academic standing. Involvement in journalism-related campus activities, organizations, and programming will also be considered.

Donor Background:

Barbara entered UW-Eau Claire in 1967 as a first-generation college student eager to major in journalism. Over four years of classes, cultural experiences, friends and faculty mentors, Barb's campus experience became life-changing. She never wavered from her journalism major and went on to work as a copy editor, arts and entertainment editor, news editor and finally editor-in-chief at The Spectator through 1971. She also took the university's first courses in women's literature and African American literature, and was part of an exploratory course on "minority press." It was here that Barb's academic interest in Native American journalism grew. Barb completed a master's degree at the University of Oregon, studying two Navajo newspapers, and a dissertation at the University of Missouri, writing a biography of Elias Boudinot (editor of the first Native American newspaper, The Cherokee Phoenix, in 1828). Barb later worked as a reporter in Antigo and as an editor of a newspaper in Dekalb, IL. In September 1974, she began her career as a college journalism professor (including three years at her alma mater). Barb retired in 2012 and attributes her education at UW-Eau Claire as the foundation of her professional career and her life.
